So soon after my post the other day, Alexander (Lee) McQueen has passed away at 40 years old. It is said that he committed suicide just days after the death of his mother, last Tuesday.
Alexander McQueen was the son of an east-end taxi driver and the youngest of six. The self-described “pink sheep of the family” was discovered by Isabelle Blow who bought every garment from his graduate show: “I bought one thing a month and paid him £100 a week. He’d bring an outfit in a bin liner, I’d look at it and then he’d come to the cashpoint with me.’” Isabelle Blow committed suicide in 2007 after being diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. This had a bad impact on McQueen who dedicated his spring/summer 2008 runway show in Paris to his friend.
He has been named British designer of the year 4 times, he received a CBE in 2003 and was named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.
His McQ line was due to be shown at New York Fashion Week, this afternoon but has now been cancelled.
